Age is one of the most important indicators of your chance of conceiving. Once you reach 35, your fertility begins to decline as your ovaries age.
Generally, couples’ conception rates are, at best, 20-25% per menstrual cycle. After 35, a woman’s chances of falling pregnant decline as her ovaries age. By age 40, it is estimated that your conception rate is about 8-10% a month and at age 43, as low as 1-3% a month.
The further away you are from what’s considered within your normal weight range, the higher the likelihood of problems arising when trying to conceive.
Ideal weight is determined by what is known as the body mass index (BMI). The formula is your weight divided by your height squared (BMI = kg/m2).
Irregular periods can suggest that ovulation is not occurring every month, making it difficult to identify the fertile window. If your periods aren’t regular, it is a good idea to talk with your GP or one of our specialists.
You should seek expert help if you are under 35 and have been unsuccessfully trying to fall pregnant for 12 months, or if you are over 35 and have been unsuccessful after six months of trying to conceive.
