Male infertility is very common, accounting for one-third of cases where there is a fertility issue.

Developing and transporting mature, healthy and functional sperm depends on a specific sequence of events occurring in the male reproductive tract.

Many disturbances can arise along that path, preventing cells from maturing into sperm or reaching the fallopian tube, where fertilisation occurs.

Problems such as sperm lacking in quantity or quality are common, making up 30 per cent of all infertility cases.

At First Step Fertility, we ease the financial burden of IVF through bulk billing for the majority of our services. Our commitment is to give you the best chance of achieving your dream of having a baby through our Fully Stimulated IVF Cycle.

Common Factors that may Contribute to Male Infertility

  • Structural abnormalities, where either the shape or movement of the sperm stops them finding or binding with the egg.
  • Sperm production disorders, where the sperm count is reduced or non-existent due to testicular failure or a total obstruction.
  • Ejaculation issues or failure to achieve an erection.
  • Immunological disorders.
  • Hormonal problems including a lack of testosterone.
  • Health problems: kidney failure; childhood infections, including mumps; diabetes; and thyroid disorders.
  • Lifestyle choices (e.g. smoking and alcohol consumption).

When Should I Seek Advice?

You should seek expert fertility help if you are under 35 and have been unsuccessfully trying to fall pregnant for 12 months, or if you are over 35 and have been unsuccessful after six months.
